Abstract:
Iranian researchers from Institute for Color Science and Technology developed an enzyme catalyst that is able to remove organic pollutants from the wastewater of different industries.
The nanocatalyst is biocompatible and can be easily separated and reused in purification processes due to its magnetic properties.
Purification of dye wastewater is important in many industries such as textile. Numerous methods have so far been employed to remove the pollutants. However, the majority of the methods are ineffective due to the chemical stability of the pigments.
In this research, the researchers produced enzyme catalysts that are stabilized on the surface of nanoparticles. According to the data analyzed in the research, results showed that the produced catalyst is environmentally friendly and has high ability to remove dyes. It also can be an appropriate suggestion for the removal of pigments from dye wastewater.
The use of stabilized enzyme can overcome some existing limitations, and lead to the production of stable catalysts with long effective lifetime. In this research, laccase enzyme was stabilized on manganese ferrite magnetic nanoparticles. The researchers investigated its ability to remove dyes in single and double component systems, and also the effect of parameters on the process.
Results of the research have applications in various industries, including paint, textile, pharmaceutics, and in general, industries that produce wastewater containing organic compounds.
Since the use of biocompatible nanomaterials is a priority in the preservation of environment for all research centers all over the world, the research group is currently working on the production and application of these materials.
Results of the research have been published in Water Research, vol. 67, issue 1, 2014, pp. 216-226.
