NeoPhotonics Names Allan Kwan to Board of Directors

SHENZHEN, China | Posted on September 8th, 2008

NeoPhotonics today announced here at the China International Optoelectronic Exposition (CIOE) the appointment of Mr. Allan Kwan to the company's Board of Directors. Mr. Kwan has more than 25 years of information technology, telecommunications and general management experience and recently spent six years at Yahoo! Inc.— first as Managing Director of North Asia regional operation, then as Vice President, International, where he was responsible for China's investment and liaison with the Alibaba group companies. Mr. Kwan was instrumental in reshaping Yahoo's market position in China after the acquisition of 3721 Network Software Company, Ltd. and the set up of 1Pai.com, an online auction joint venture with industry leader Sina.com in 2004. These actions led to the US$1.7B investment by Yahoo! into Alibaba.com in Aug 2005.

Prior to Yahoo!, Mr. Kwan was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Asia.com, a provider of web services, online travel and mobile commerce services. Prior to Asia.com, Kwan spent six years at Motorola where he led the development of mobile Internet services and the growth of the paging business in Greater China. As Vice President and General Manager of the Paging Subscriber Division, he managed more than 2500 employees and built one of the most profitable operations in the company with annual revenues exceeding US$1 billion. Kwan also worked at Nortel for more than 10 years − managing functional areas in Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Telco Marketing, International Business Development and Wireless Systems Sales.

"We welcome Allan to the Board and look forward to his guidance and contributions as we continue our rapid growth, particularly in the Asian region," Tim Jenks, CEO and Chairman of the Board.

"NeoPhotonics has made quite an impact in the telecommunications industry, through tremendous advancements in product design and manufacturing expertise," said Kwan. "As seen in the continuing growth of wireline and wireless broadband services around the world, this is an exciting time for the industry and I look forward to helping the company continue its growth trajectory."

Kwan holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honor) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia in Canada, and a Master of Business Administration degree with Distinction from the Wharton School, and a Master of Arts degree in International Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Kwan also served on the International Advisory Board of Xuhui District in Shanghai until 2007 and was an independent Board director of Linktone (NASDAQ: LTON) until earlier this year. Mr. Kwan currently serves as Oak Investment Partners' venture partner in Asia, having joined the firm in April 2007.

Separately, the company also announced that it has raised more than $30M in equity capital, to be used for working capital and other corporate purposes.

NeoPhotonics is showcasing here at CIOE, in booth A811, the industry's most complete portfolio of MEMS and PLC based optical solutions, as well as NeoPhotonics® extensive portfolio of GPON and GEPON transceivers for FTTH applications and its broad line of telecom transceiver products in SFF, SFP and XFP form factors.
