SUNY Poly CNSE to Present Cutting-Edge Semiconductor Technology Developments at SEMICON West 2015 Conference

Promoting the numerous opportunities stemming from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s strategic investments in New York State’s high-tech economy, SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (SUNY Poly CNSE) announced today that its team of pioneering researchers, in addition to collaborating scientists from a number of SUNY Poly CNSE’s corporate and academic partners, will play a major role in the internationally recognized SEMICON West 2015 conference in San Francisco, California. There, they will offer significant semiconductor-based research and development presentations, featuring updates on the industry’s transition to the new 450mm wafer standard and information about how to take part in New York State’s growing innovation corridor. As part of a SUNY Poly-led U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium forum taking place alongside the concurrently held Intersolar North America conference, consortium leaders will also lead a discussion on the ways to unleash the power of clean energy-focused industry collaboration.

During the SEMICON West 2015 engagement, SUNY Poly CNSE executives and scientists will provide a number of presentations that will highlight further growth and technical achievements, such as progress related to the next-generation 450mm computer chip platform that is currently underway at the institution’s $20 billion Albany megaplex, home to the Global 450mm Consortium (G450C). Presenters will detail the delivery and deployment of lithography tools such as the 120w Gigaphoton ArF laser and Nikon 450mm 193nm wavelength immersion scanner. They will also provide updates on the significant progress that has been made processing 450mm patterned wafers. Additionally, SUNY Poly CNSE presenters will reveal the first true, notchless 450mm immersion scanner patterned wafers utilizing a SEMI-approved reference point, which will eliminate the need for wafer notches that have been traditionally used as a reference to enable the construction of computer chips on circular silicon wafers. Specific presentation topics include, “CMP Technical and Market Trends ‘SUNY Polytechnic Institute CMP Center and 450mm CMP Status Update,’” “HVM Metrology Needs Toward the 5nm Node,” “Adjacent Spaces: Opportunities for Growth for the Semiconductor Supply Chain,” and “Update on Industry Status of 450mm,” among a number of other topics. Representatives from a number of SUNY Poly CNSE’s global corporate partners also plan to present at SEMICON West 2015, including Applied Materials, ASML, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, IBM, Intel, Nikon, and TSMC.

In addition, conference attendees will be able to learn about the four cutting-edge technology development centers that are based at the SUNY Poly CNSE Albany Nanotech Complex. The centers are managed by SUNY Poly CNSE and SUNY Poly SEMATECH as SEMATECH is being transformed into a global research, development, and economic vitality arm of the State of New York through SUNY Poly. The leading-edge centers focus on Chemical Mechanical Polishing/Planarization (CMP), 3D (computer chip packaging), Resist, and III-V Compounds, respectively, to enable companies to assess their materials, test new tooling, and validate designs through access to advanced fabrication resources and engineering expertise.

Through our information booths and presentations, and in partnership with Empire State Development, we are not only eager to share the latest progress that has been made related to the development of the 450mm platform, for example, but also how this story reflects a growing, collaborative business framework that offers untold potential for semiconductor and clean energy-focused businesses in New York State.”

In addition to the various presentations by SUNY Poly CNSE researchers and partners, the more than 30,000 people who are expected to attend the conference will be able to learn about the institution’s leading-edge resources, innovation hubs, and technology development center partnership opportunities at an exhibition booth developed in partnership with New York State’s Empire State Development agency. Representatives from SUNY Poly CNSE and SEMATECH will also be able to provide information about New York State’s unique business incentives, such as Governor Andrew Cuomo’s innovative Start-Up NY initiative which is establishing tax-free communities across New York State, including at a number of SUNY Poly’s high-tech hubs located in Albany, Halfmoon, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, Canandaigua, and Buffalo. Booth number 5343 will be located in the Moscone Center’s North Hall, and representatives will be available Tuesday, July 14, through Wednesday, July 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Thursday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Leading researchers from SUNY Poly CNSE and the State University of New York at Binghamton will also be on hand at a second SEMICON West booth, representing the SUNY Networks of Excellence, SUNY Materials & Advanced Manufacturing (M&AM). They will be able to provide attendees with information about a number of specific areas of flexible electronics research, development, and commercialization that are taking place as part of this cross-discipline network. Research areas include nanobioscience with an emphasis on substrates for cell manipulation and surface-directed DNA separation; photovoltaics, with an emphasis on high-reliability, moderate efficiency PV for applications on windows and other large architectural surfaces, as well as advancement of non-toxic organic and inorganic absorbers and conductors; and low-cost, flexible, intelligent, and autonomous sensors for biomedical diagnostics and monitoring of human performance. The SUNY Networks of Excellence aim to connect students and faculty with each other and with external funders and private sector experts to spur research and drive innovation, economic opportunity, and job growth across New York State. The booth will be located inside the Innovation Village Startup Showcase and Research Park in the North Exhibit Hall.

Running concurrently with the Intersolar 2015 conference, which is being held in San Francisco alongside SEMICON West 2015, the U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC), an industry-led consortium for cooperative R&D among industry, university, and government partners spearheaded by SUNY Poly CNSE, will host an invite-only “Thought Leadership Forum” titled, “Applying ‘Moonshot’ Thinking to the C&I Solar Market.” There, solar industry leaders, along with representatives from SUNY Poly CNSE and the U.S. Department of Energy, will share insights and confront the challenges faced by the solar commercial and industrial market, seizing this unprecedented moment to put processes in place in order to capture innovative ideas as they unfold, especially as they relate to the burgeoning Commercial and Industrial (C&I) PV rooftop market which may exceed 100 GW by 2030.

SEMICON West is the annual tradeshow for the microelectronics manufacturing industries where leaders present research and other sector-shaping progress reports via keynote addresses, executive panels, and technical and business sessions to attendees from around the world. In addition to the more than 650 expected exhibitors and hundreds of product displays, the event also features applications and topics ranging from micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) to nanoelectronics and the Internet of Things. The conference runs from July 14 through July 16.
