Abstract:
Phonsi is a consortium combining research institutes, IBM and a startup (Single Quantum) with world leading expertise in synthesis, characterization and integration of these nanocrystals. The project has the ambition to train a next generation of researchers with a very high level of expertise in all aspects of nanocrystal science and has the ambition to gain new insights in synthesis, characterization, processing and integration of nanocrystals into devices that allow us to operate at the single photon level.

Ghent University leads large-scale European training project on quantum dots

Quantum dots are extremely small semiconductor materials (nanocrystals) that can be used to emit and detect light with very specific characteristics even up to the single-photon level. Today, the coming-of-age of these novel optical nanomaterials is driving the next steps in the evolution of light based technologies and recent breakthrough examples in displays and lighting demonstrate the huge impact nanocrystals will have on making our future way of living sustainable and comfortable.

Phonsi is a consortium combining research institutes (UGent (coordinator), Utrecht University, Israel Institute of Technology, ESPCI Paris, Imec, Friedrich Alexander Universitat Erlangen-Nurnberg and ETH Zurich); a large company (IBM) and a startup (Single Quantum) with world leading expertise in synthesis, characterization and integration of these nanocrystals.

The project is supported by partner organizations: Cardiff University, Philips, Nexdot, Flamac and IEMN-ISEN.
