Quantum dots gain magnetic appeal
Abstract:
An international team of scientists have developed a new type of semiconductor that could lead to faster more efficient computers with over double the average existing hard drive storage capacity.
The new research centres on a class of semiconductor called 'magnetic quantum dots'.
The new work, reported today in the journal Nature Materials, describes a class of quantum dots that not only control electrons, but also have good magnetic properties allowing them to read the electron's spin.
Professor Jin Zou, Chair in Nanoscience at the University of Queensland's Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis says by detecting electron spin, scientists can find new uses for quantum dots.
