Greener energy is the focus at UCSB event
Abstract:
There were some technologies presented Saturday that were opening up new possibilities.
Altair Nanotechnologies Inc. uses nanotech to create better materials. The applications range from life science to energy — in particular, better batteries.
The company is working with partners to create a large energy storage system that could join with the power grid or provide the battery for a new electric car. It also is working on a U.S. Navy project that would put a battery on ships to replace one of the two diesel generators running at all times to create a fuel cost savings of about $1.5 million per year per ship, said Jeffrey McKinney, vice president and chief patent counsel.
There are distinct challenges with new technology, including the initial cost, McKinney said. That's one reason the company is working with the military, which is able to pay more for increased performance.
