Intel Brief: FinNano, emerging leader

Abstract:
It is likely that Finland will emerge as a major competitor with the US and UK in electronic nanomaterial applications by 2009 due to FinNano, a five-year national nanotechnology initiative. The program focuses on innovative nanostructure materials and new nanoelectronics solutions, with the goal of establishing Finland as a world leader in several technologies and applications.

According to a 2006 Tekes government survey, "Nanotechnology in Finnish Industry," the number of companies active in nanotechnology projects has more than doubled in the past two years, increasing from 61 in 2004 to 129 in 2006, a 111 percent growth rate.

It is highly likely that this growth is due to FinNano, which has allocated US$93.5 million, according to a report from Researchandmarkets.com. An additional US$40 million is also available for nano-related research and development.
