Abstract:
Iranian researchers from the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of University of Kashan used a new capping agent and succeeded in the synthesis of silica nanoparticles with highly homogenous spherical structure under laboratorial conditions.
By studying various laboratorial conditions, the researchers obtained optimum conditions for the synthesis of spherical nanoparticles. Nanosilica has applications in ceramics, chromatography devices, electronic pieces, photoelectric devices, etc.
Maryam Masjedi Arani, one of the researchers, elaborated on the objectives of the research. "The goal of the research was to produce silica nanoparticles with spherical and completely homogenous morphology at appropriate dimensions. In this synthesis method, important commercial surfactants were used, including anionic, cationic, and polymeric surfactants. However, no optimum product was obtained contrary to our expectations. We used a new space-capping agent that was produced in laboratory, and very homogenous and small nanoparticles were obtained."
"The capping agent possessed advantages, including cheap price, availability and simple synthesis method."
"We tried to achieve our goal through a few steps in this research. In the first step, the capping agent was synthesized, which is an important advantage of this method for the production of homogenous nanoparticles in morphology and size. Next, spherical silica nanoparticles were synthesized through sonochemical methods by using the capping agent, and finally, important analytical methods were used to characterize optimum nanoparticles," she said.
According to Masjedi, this method to synthesize homogenous and spherical nanoparticles can be used in pharmaceutics as a cost-effective synthesis method, and it can resolve some of the problems in medical society.
Results of the research have been published in Ceramics International, vol. 40, issue 1, June 2014, pp. 495-499.
