Promise and perils of a small new world: nanotechnology
Abstract:
researchers at Murdoch University are pleased with the progress they have made using nanotechnology to create a mineral powder that has some of the characteristics of bone and which could have dramatic effects on joint replacement surgery by helping form a supportive bed of bone around the prosthesis.
At the Centre for Strategic Nano-Fabrication at the University of Western Australia, researchers are developing methods to target cancer by attaching medical nanoparticles to drugs, which can then be directed by an external magnetic field to tumours in the body.
Centre director Colin Raston believes that attaching nanoparticles to new and existing drugs will become an important technique because it should allow drug doses to be reduced, cutting overdose and side-effect risks as well as manufacturing costs.
