Home > Press > Magnetic Nanosorbents Able to Eliminate Chemical Contaminants
Abstract:
Iranian researchers from Shahid Beheshti University succeeded in the production of a nanosorbent that can separate high percentages of contaminants in natural samples.
The nanosorbent is separated from the media immediately due to its magnetic properties and can be reused. Various industries, including water and wastewater purification can use the results of the research.
Heavy metals, including lead and cadmium, do not leave the body after entering it. They deposit and accumulate in tissues like fat, muscles, bones and joints. This fact causes numerous diseases and malfunctions. These metals are more possible to be found in water, soil and air as industries develop and the consumption of chemicals increases. Therefore, it is more probable for people to deal with the dangers caused by the metals.
The synthesized nanostructure has shown high ability in concentration and separation of the pollutants (about 90%). According to the researchers, the time-consuming nature of the process to separate the sorbent from the media is one of the most important problems in the elimination of pollutants. The separation of the sorbent takes place instantly by using magnetic nanoparticles in this research through an external magnetic field. This characteristic can play an important role in the commercialization of the product. The sorbent also has high reusability.
Taking into consideration the low production cost, it can be expected that an important step has been taken towards the determination of the amount of natural contaminants in the environment by producing this sorbent at large scale.
Results of the research have been published in Michrochimica Acta, vol. 181, issue 15-16, 2014, pp. 1781-1788.
