Abstract:
Iranian researchers proposed a method to reduce the time required for the synthesis of nanocomposites and to determine the size of the final grain.
Results of the research have applications in all industries that deal with nanocomposite production, and they reduce the cost and energy in those production methods.
Mechanical alloying is one of the methods used for the production of nanocomposites. The amount of energy transferred to materials and the size of the final nanopowder depend on various parameters in this method, including type and size of the ball, spinning speed, temperature and reaction time. In case an equation is obtained to optimize these parameters, the transferring energy becomes the maximum possible amount, and the reaction time decreases. The aim of the research was to obtain a model to predict and minimize the time for the production of nanocomposites through mechanical alloying method.
In this research, a combination of modeling and optimization - that are the two branches of artificial intelligence - has been used in the field of materials engineering for the production of nanopowders.
This research solves the problems in the production of nanocomposites through mechanical alloying method. For instance, it provides an accurate prediction about the grain size of the nanocomposite. Therefore, there is no need for x-ray test or even SEM images. Moreover, understanding the grain size minimizes the number of sampling and saves time and energy.
The researchers applied the results in practical scale to verify the findings of artificial intelligence theory. Results of the experimental tests show that the time for the production of Al2O3-TiB2 nanocomposite is much less in optimized conditions than in non-optimized one.
Results of the research have been published in Ceramics international, vol. 40, issue 7-A, 2014, pp. 9675-9692.
