Abstract:
Iranian researchers from Isfahan University of Technology successfully obtained the production method of steel nanocomposite with particle size range of 50-100 nm.
Interstitial-free (IF) steels are steels with very low amount of carbon and nitrogen. These types of steels have high flexibility at macrostructure state, but their yield strength is rather low. Despite numerous tries, no researcher has so far succeeded in the creation of an IF steel nanostructure.
Researchers have applied various severe plastic deformation methods on IF steels, but the minimum size of the obtained particles had been about 300 nm. Therefore, the wide application and advantages of nanostructured materials persuaded the researchers to carry out some studies in this regard in order to obtain nanostructured IF steels.
Researchers produced nanostructured IF steel in this research by using silicon carbide nanoparticles through severe plastic deformation method. The production of this nanocomposite leads to the production of a type of steel with much higher strength in comparison with the initial sample. Therefore, the required thickness can be reduced to one-fourth for specific applications, which consequently results in significant reduction in costs. The product of this research can also overcome the problem of low strength of vehicle bodies.
In this research, it can be expressed that the addition of ceramic particles, including silicon carbide (SiC) to IF steel sheets, can result in the production of nanostructures through cumulative rolling process. This method overcomes problems such as porosity remained in compressed samples, ball milling process impurities, and mass-production.
Results of the research have been published in Materials Characterization, vol. 93, issue 1, 2014, pp. 150-162.
