NanoCollege receives NIH help
Abstract:
The University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering has been awarded nearly $5 million in federal grants recently -- bringing the total federal funding the college has received over the past 12 months to $10 million.
And one of the most important grants wasn't for computer chip research -- which the school is best known for -- but in the area of nanobioscience, one of its fastest-growing areas.
Susan Sharfstein, an associate professor of nanobioscience who moved to the NanoCollege about a year ago from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, was awarded an $836,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health for a research project that is using genetic engineering to produce heparin from the cells of hamsters.
