'Bucks for Jobs' endowment could lead to high-tech future
Abstract:
The $50 million job-creation endowment that Gov. Joe Manchin proposed Wednesday is aimed at making West Virginia a national player in high-tech business fields like biotechnology, biomedical sciences and nanotechnology.
In his State of the State address, Manchin said he would ask the Legislature to allocate $50 million of budget surplus money to the endowment, which he is calling "Bucks for Jobs," as it's modeled on a similar 10-year-old Kentucky endowment nicknamed "Bucks for Brains."
The money would go toward hiring research scientists and funding new labs at West Virginia and Marshall universities to undertake research leading to patents, products and spinoff companies.
