10 major innovations to look for in the coming decade

Abstract:
Medical miniaturization

New diagnostic tools are being developed that can analyze whether a patient has cancer or is suffering a heart attack in a doctor's office, ambulance, at home or in an isolated African village. Advances in medical nanotechnology could lead to tiny implants that can automatically test patients and diagnose disease without the need for hospital visits.

Nanotechnology

The science of working with objects on the scale of atoms and molecules is already a $9-billion industry, used in 600 consumer products like carbon fibre tennis rackets and bicycles, stain-proof clothing and computer chips, according to the Nanotechnology Project. Advances in nanostructures may create new types of drugs that can treat cancer, heart disease and Parkinson's, or create artificial tissues to replace damaged kidneys or livers.
