Theorists devise world's smallest fridge
Abstract:
Two theoretical physicists say it is possible to build a tiny refrigerator that is powered by Brownian motion, the random movement of small particles caused by collisions with surrounding molecules. The concept, which is counterintuitive because such fluctuations normally hinder cooling, has been proposed by Chris Van den Broeck from Hasselt University in Belgium and Ryoichi Kawai of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the US. If realised, the molecular-sized device would be the world's smallest refrigerator and could be used to cool down future nanoscale machines.
