Abstract:
One of the biggest challenges in building electronic circuits from individual, electrically conducting molecules — the ultimate in device miniaturization — is to position such molecules accurately on a surface. A team of researchers in France has now shown that the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) can be used to excavate shallow pits or 'molds' on the surface of a silicon wafer that are shaped to receive organic molecules, so that the molecules stick at a particular location and in a particular position.
