Florida seeks to create 21st century economy with inventions law
Abstract:
The legislative proposals would provide seed money to help universities or research institutions prepare their inventions for the first round of big funding from venture capitalists.
Another element is an Institute for Commercialization to attract those venture investors to Florida. Ring likens it to a department store for venture capitalists, with a floor for life sciences, a floor for information technology, a floor for alternative technology and a floor for nanotechnology.
Such a focal pointwould be helpful, said John Kim, a Miami venture capitalist. Intellectual innovation in other states tends to be centered on one region, he said. "We have our top universities in Tallahassee and Gainesville. We've got our venture capitalists in South Florida," Ring said. "The out-of-state venture capitalists, to them the center of the state is Miami, it's not the center of Florida."
