Now in its 12th year, the Group IV Photonics Conference (GFP 2015) features a single-track technical program focused on the latest advances Group IV element-based photonic materials and devices, and related integration and fabrication technologies, especially silicon photonics. GFP 2015 fosters one-on-one interaction between colleagues, including oral and poster sessions of contributed and invited papers, as well as an informative plenary session, industry forum, and the pre-conference workshop.

“As one of the leading international meetings dedicated to silicon photonics materials, devices and processes, the Group IV Photonics Conference continues to be a unique opportunity for photonics researchers, engineers, and academics to share information and discuss the most recent developments in this vital area of photonics,” said GFP 2015 General Chair, Dr. Pavel Cheben, National Research Council, Canada. “We have specifically set up the conference program to foster interaction between participants and presenters in a variety of stimulating presentations, sessions, and workshops,” added GFP 2015 Program Chair, Prof. Andy Knights, McMaster University, Canada.

Pre-GFP Silicon Photonics Workshop (Tuesday, 25 August)
In advance of GFP 2015, a three-part workshop will be held to provide an opportunity to teach participants how to design silicon photonics circuitry with a platform design kit (PDK), including schematic-driven design & layout tools; rapid-turn E-beam fabrication and testing; and a multi-project wafer (MPW) foundry availability. Hosted by Lumerical Solutions, the workshop will be held at the Pinnacle Vancouver Harbourfront Hotel, and includes a complimentary reception and dinner at the nearby Grouse Mountain Resort.

Plenary Speakers (Wednesday, 26 August & Thursday, 27 August)
Opening the conference are two plenary sessions:
“Enabling Large-Scale Deployment of Photonics Through Cost-Efficient & Scalable Packaging,” by Tymon Barwicz from IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center (USA). Enabling single-mode photonic packaging in high-throughput microelectronic equipment can dramatically improve cost and scalability, as experimentally demonstrated using 12-fiber interfaces and flipped-chip lasers.
“Silicon is Forever: Scaling IT with Silicon Microphotonics,” by Lionel Kimerling of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA).

Featured Speakers - Novel Materials & Nanophotonics
- Detlev Grützmacher, Forschungszentrum Juelich (Germany) on “The GeSn Laser: Enabler for Monolithic Integration of Photonics on Si.”
- Siegfried Janz, National Research Council (Canada) on “Subwavelength Engineering for Integrated Photonics.”
- Richard Soref, University of Massachusetts at Boston (USA) on “Phase-Change Materials for Group IV Electro-Optical Switching & Modulation.”

Featured Speakers – Photonic Devices
- Po Dong, Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent (USA) on “Silicon Photonic Devices for Complex Modulation Formats & Coherent Communications.”
- Tsuyoshi Horikawa, AIST & PETRA (Japan) on “Ultra-Fine Si Photonics Fabrication Technology based on 40nm Node CMOS Process.”
- Delphine Marris-Morini, University of Paris Sud (France) on “Silicon Photonics based on Ge/SiGe Quantum Well Structures.”
- Shinji Matsuo, NTT Photonics Laboratories (Japan) on “On-Silicon Integration of Compact & Energy-Efficient DFB Lasers with 40Gbps Direct Modulation.”
- Milos Popovic, University of Colorado at Boulder (USA) on “Harnessing the Concept of Imaginary Coupling in Passive & Active Photonic Devices.”

Featured Speakers – Silicon Photonic Applications & Systems

Industry Forum
A special industry forum has been added to the GFP 2015 program, consisting of ten invited presentations from industry leaders. They will be presented in four sessions throughout the course of the conference. Details of the industry forum speakers are here: http://www.gfp-ieee.org/program/Industry-Forum

Other technical program highlights
In addition, the GFP 2015 program will include a poster session at the opening reception, as well as a post-deadline session to enable attendees to hear the latest developments in rapidly advancing technology fields. A complete listing of the GFP 2015 program is available here: www.gfp-ieee.org/documents/GFP-2015-Advance-Program-7-15.2.pdf

Evening Gala Dinner Cruise
An exceptional highlight of the GFP 2015 conference will be the opportunity for participants to view Vancouver harbor and its unique landmarks on a relaxing two-hour evening dinner cruise, hosted by RANOVUS & Rockley Photonics.
