Abstract:
The director of NASA's Ames Research Center near Mountain View says he is optimistic that a plan to send people to Mars will boost the center's fortunes. It specializes in a number of areas that could prove useful for exploring the red planet (such as) research in nanotechnology, which could produce new, ultra-light materials for shielding astronauts from heat and radiation.
