NTERA Ltd., the market-leading developer of NanoChromics displays (NCD) using state-of-the-art patented nanostructured materials has announced the launch of its NCD technology for direct drive display applications with commercial product availability in Q4 2004.

Developed using the latest in nanostructured materials, NCD offers superior optical performance and cost-effectiveness over existing LCD and new display technologies. NCDs will be commercially available in Q4 2004 for the low-resolution display market (e.g. clocks, whitegoods, meters, instrumentation displays, etc) and will be manufactured at NTERA's production facilities in Taiwan and Ireland. Additionally NTERA will license its technology to Liquid Crystal Display producers to sell and manufacture to their customer bases.

"The ability to cost effectively manufacture NCD on existing LCD manufacturing lines has greatly accelerated our timeframe to commercially launch our products", said Nick How, President, NTERA. " In addition, the combination of the visually compelling features and cost effectiveness together with the development of NCD specific electronics solutions, means that manufacturers, specifiers and suppliers of products utilizing displays now have a real product differentiator offering distinct advantages over existing display technologies.

For high-resolution active matrix displays (e.g. notebooks, PDAs, e-readers, etc) and applications such as flexible displays, NTERA is working with a number of strategic partners to access this market.

NanoChromics Displays (NCD)

NCD technology uses nanostructured semiconducting metal oxide films with a layer of electrochromic viologen molecules to produce displays that look like ink on paper with pure white background and very high contrast ratios.

Benefits of NCD over other display technologies include:

  • Ink on paper readability offering unrivalled optical performance
  • Paper white or crystal clear backgrounds giving it more than four times the reflectivity and contrast of an LCD
  • Bistable characteristics means that power is only required for image updating resulting in dramatically reduced power consumption
  • 1v DC low voltage operation
  • Cost effective manufacturing. NCDs are manufactured using existing LCD manufacturing processes.
