Nanoparticles Give Antibacterial Properties to Machine-Woven Carpets

Tehran, Iran | Posted on August 4th, 2015

The threads are used in the weaving of carpets, and they give antibacterial properties to the carpet. They also prevent the bad smell of carpets in the crowded places.

The main objective of the research was to produce antibacterial carpets to prevent the bad smell of the carpets in contact with human body sweat in crowded places, including mosques.

Results of the research showed that antibacterial materials used in machine-woven carpets made of polyester have high stability. Among the most important advantages of this research, mention can be made of prevention of bad smell in carpets and prevention of the growth of gram-positive or gram-negative bacteria such as E.Coli. These advantages are obtained by using silver and copper nanoparticles. All results obtained in this research are based on a sequence of scientific research at industrial scale.

According to the researchers, antibacterial materials based on silver nanoparticles have been stabilized on polyester filament in this research. This study mainly focuses on the production of machine-woven carpets. Although the production of antibacterial carpets is more expensive, the presence of antibacterial properties with long durability in the carpet makes them an appropriate option for crowded places due to the direct contact of people with the surface of the carpet.

Results of the research have been published in Materiali in Technologije, vol. 49, issue 3, 2015, pp. 461-465.
