Solegear Further Strengthens its Product Development Team: New Hire Seeks to Create New, Disruptive, Sustainable Materials

Vancouver, Canada | Posted on June 17th, 2015

Dr. Sabaf Shafiei Sabet holds a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of British Columbia and also holds a BSc. and MSc. in Polymer Engineering and Nanotechnology, and has completed extensive practical research using nanotechnology to improve the performance of bioplastics. "We are extremely proud to have Dr. Shafiei Sabet join our talented product development team, " stated Dr. Michel Labonté, Solegear's Chief Technology Officer. "At the University of British Columbia, Dr. Shafiei Sabet gained in-depth knowledge of biomaterials and expertise in the rheology of complex systems to manage the unique flow characteristics of biopolymers. Dr. Shafiei Sabet is driven to apply her knowledge and expertise towards development of sustainable engineering materials, and we expect she will prove to be a tremendous addition to our team."

Dr. Labonté has led Solegear's biopolymer engineering team since 2010, creating Solegear's portfolio of proprietary, patent-pending Polysole® and Traverse® biopolymer product lines. Having previously worked in technical capacities within Canadian companies such as Bombardier and Cascades, Dr. Labonté has also designed and led university-level plastics curriculums both nationally and internationally. Michel holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC) of Montreal, Canada and a Ph.D from École Polytechnique de Montréal, one of Canada's leading plastics technology institutions.

"Hiring Dr. Sabet Shafiei is an example of Solegear's continuous efforts to identify the very best talent emerging from material science universities in Canada," stated Dr. Labonte. "We continue to see a growing interest and passion amongst young engineers at our universities who want to direct that passion toward creating new disruptive, sustainable materials. This source of talent and fresh creativity is an important asset in Solegear's continued growth as a leading innovator in the bioplastics industry."
