Iranian researchers from Sharif University of Technology in Iran in association with researchers from University of Waterloo, Canada, in a joint research studied the possibility and mechanism of effective connection between metallic alloys and polymers.

Novel Method Found for Connection of Metallic Alloys to Polymers

Tehran, Iran | Posted on November 23rd, 2014

Results of the research have applications in automobile manufacturing industry to connect polymeric pieces to metallic ones.

Automobile manufacturers have always looked for the production of lighter, safer and more biocompatible materials. The use of aluminum alloys and polymeric objects and their combinations has made possible this objective.

Results of the research solve the problems of non-uniform connection of objects made of aluminum alloys to thermoplastic polymeric objects. In this research, friction stir welding method has been used as an efficient method in comparison with chemical connection method by using glue or mechanical one by using bolt and rivet. In addition, the research optimizes the parameters and conditions of friction stir welding process to obtain a connection with appropriate appearance and properties between aluminum 5059 alloy and high density polyethylene. This study is the first report on the non-uniform connection of aluminum to polyethylene, or in general terms, between metals and polymers, through friction stir welding process.

According to the researchers, non-uniform connection of solid state of aluminum alloy to polyethylene through friction stir welding method significantly increases the rate of production in comparison with chemical connection methods based on glue or mechanical ones based on bolt and rivet. As a result, the final cost and price of the product is decreased, and it also reduces the environmental pollutions and the side effects.

It was observed in this research that the creation of a semi-crystalline layer with a thickness of about 30 nm of corundum phase of alumina in the intersection of aluminum and polymeric bases played an important role in the connection of non-uniform materials.

Results of the research have been published in Materials Characterization, vol. 98, issue 1, 2014, pp. 73-82.
