A Graphene oxide based assay to detect cancer

Abstract:
Among the possible applications of the high surface area of graphene is sensing and drug transport. Like carbon nanotubes, graphene is an efficient fluorescence quencher for organic fluorescent molecules. In addition, the production of bulk amounts of graphene sheets and their possible modification with functional groups to improve water solubility have been realized, so applications of this nanomaterial to medical diagnosis and biosensing can be explored.

A group comprised of scientists from Jilin and Kobe has used graphene to detect a specific protein through fluorescence quenching. Sugimoto, Qu and coworkers developed a simple, ultra-sensitive, and selective signal-on fluorescence assay for detection of the protein cyclin A2, which is an indicator of early-stage cancer.
