Editorial: A shot in the arm

Abstract:
The Department of Labor projected in 2008 that the employment of pharmacists will rise at a faster-than-average pace through 2016, and drug chains have struggled to fill pharmacy vacancies.

At the same time, there is only one public pharmacy school in the state, at UNC-Chapel Hill, which typically receives several hundred applications for scarcely more than 150 slots. One of the state's two private school pharmacy programs, at Wingate University, recently received 1,112 applications for 70 seats.

As for what the school would do for the Triad, it would likely locate on a 4.3-acre downtown site donated by the Weaver Foundation, where it would add fresh momentum to the revival of the center city.

It would fit snugly as a major research partner with the N.C. A&T/UNCG Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering.
