Planned centre for laboratory-based brain tumour research
Abstract:
One area that it is looking at is the development of better diagnostic tools, including looking at the genetic profiles of tumour cells to assess their sensitivity to different drug therapies.
"At the moment this is not being applied in clinical diagnostic laboratories - it is more a research tool," Pilkington told MLW. "But if we can develop it, we can bring it into clinical diagnostics."
The research team is also investigating nanoparticle delivery systems for brain tumours.
Pilkington also sees the day when the centre will have its own brain tissue bank, given the amount of tissue culture it currently undertakes.
