Solid-state drives add zing to laptops

Abstract:
It is nanotechnology on silicon similar to that of computer processors and is the most expensive part of memory, readily available in USB sticks and dozens of different-shaped cards for digital cameras, portable media players and now, embedded in cellphones.

Although spinning hard drives were also prohibitively expensive for early consumer computers 20 years ago -- $400 for a 20-megabyte drive -- they now cost a fraction of a penny per megabyte and have mushroomed to one terabyte (one million megabytes).
