UK small caps firm midday, tracking wider gains; Nanoscience up on chip news

Abstract:
Shares in UK smaller companies advanced in midday trade, tracking gains across the broader market, with Nanoscience a good riser after a unit passed a key milestone, dealers said.

At 11.41 am, the FTSE Small Cap index was 6.5 points firmer at 4,103.6, while the FTSE 100 index had added 37.0 points to 6,438.5.

Shares in Nanoscience were among the top performers, jumping 18 pct or 1-3/4 pence to 11-1/4 after the firm announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Toumaz Technology had passed a key milestone.
