Don Monkerud: UCSC should expand ... in Watsonville

Abstract:
Consider, for example, the recent announcement of an $80 million, 92,000-square-foot Biomedical Science building at UCSC. Though it certainly provides many jobs for lawyers filing lawsuits, how many jobs does it bring to Watsonville? Slated for 1,350 undergraduate and graduate students to study biology, chemistry, nanotechnology and bioinformatics, such a building would spur local business and add a much-needed jolt to Watsonville's economy. While other planned buildings may be a better fit for the site, there are many advantages to bringing 4,500 UCSC students to the area with perhaps additional increases beyond 2020.
