Biotechnology in the Tobacco Belt: Danville Weighs In
Abstract:
An important component of the economic development program is a downtown revitalization initiative, in which Luna Innovations, Inc. took advantage of an abandoned tobacco warehouse. This 18th century structure is currently being refurbished for manufacturing and product development of nanomaterials. Luna Innovations (Blackburg, VA) has initiated 6 new companies in the last 5 years, opening branches in Charlottesville, Baltimore, Hampton Roads, and of course Danville. They are pursuing a wide range of übertechnology, including manufacturing process control, next generation cancer drug development, analytical instrumentation, novel nanomaterials, advanced petroleum monitoring systems and wireless remote asset management.
