Declaration adopted to support fair trade

Abstract:
Asia-Pacific science and technology ministers yesterday adopted the Bangkok Declaration in an attempt to enhance the role of science and technology to support fair trade rather than just free trade. Thai minister Korn Dabbaransi said it was agreed science and technology should be used to promote trade under fairer rules and through negotiations.

In addition, the declaration called for increased access by developing countries to new areas of science and technology such as nanotechnology. The meeting also called for more understanding of the importance of ethics and for emerging technologies to be developed with due care for their impact.
