Nextel announces innovation prize

Abstract:
The eight grants, in various amounts up to $50,000, are going to MIT engineering faculty members and are intended to vault concept-stage research into innovative products and services. Deshpande says he is ''confident that the disruptive technologies that we are funding will make a significant impact on the market.'' The center plans to award $15 million in additional grants over the next four years, including a new round this fall.
