BESSTECH Names Doug Grose as Chief Technology Officer: Former GLOBALFOUNDRIES CEO to drive technology roadmap and strategic partnerships for emerging lithium-ion battery component company

Albany, NY | Posted on July 14th, 2015

Grose will lead development of BESSTECH’s technology roadmap, driving advances in its low-cost, high-performance, silicon-based anodes for lithium-ion battery applications. In addition, he will spearhead the establishment of strategic partnerships among both supply chain and manufacturing entities.

The addition of Grose’s recognized leadership and technical know-how is designed to accelerate the commercialization and market introduction of BESSTECH’s innovative technology, while also enabling integration of its pioneering anodes into a variety of consumer and industrial solutions.

“We believe there is a great opportunity in applying the expertise, constant improvement roadmap, and manufacturing efficiency of the semiconductor world into the energy storage space,” said Fernando Gómez-Baquero, CEO of BESSTECH LLC. “I can’t think of anyone better than Doug Grose to help BESSTECH bring that revolutionary change to the lithium-ion battery world.”

From 2009 to 2011, Grose served as the first CEO of GLOBALFOUNDRIES, currently the world’s second-largest semiconductor foundry company. He led the successful merger of Chartered Semiconductors into GLOBALFOUNDRIES and directed expansion of the company’s leading-edge technology capacity in New York, Germany and Singapore.

“I am thrilled to join BESSTECH and to assist the company in capturing a share of the fast-growing global market for next-generation battery technology,” said Grose. “As the use of mobile technology rises exponentially, BESSTECH is well positioned to capitalize on the critical need for smaller, lighter and more powerful batteries, and well served by its presence in New York’s world-class nanotechnology ecosystem. I look forward to working with the team at BESSTECH to integrate a ‘semiconductor approach’ to fuel new opportunities for growth.”

Prior to GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Grose served as Senior Vice President of Technology Development, Manufacturing and Supply Chain at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and held a number of executive roles during more than 20 years with IBM’s Technology Products Division, including General Manager of Technology Development and Manufacturing Systems.

Additionally, Grose served as Chief Operating Officer of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, where he directed a merger between IBM and Hitachi Storage Technology Divisions, and as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at NanoTech Resources – what is now SUNY Polytechnic Institute – supporting accelerated advanced technology commercialization.

A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with an MBA and bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. in Materials Engineering, Grose is a member of the Supervisory Board of ASML, serving as Vice Chairman; Co-Chairman of the board of SBA Materials; and a Senior Advisor at SHG Group.

BESSTECH’s anode technology, which is exclusively licensed from SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE), can produce lighter lithium-ion batteries that charge faster – with charging rates as low as 6 minutes – have longer times between charging, and offer increased lifetimes of more than 1,000 cycles.

About BESSTECH LLC
BESSTECH LLC is a lithium-ion component design and engineering company, delivering solutions to lithium-ion battery manufacturers and assemblers. Its first product is a silicon-based nanoengineered anode for lithium-ion battery systems. BESSTECH’s anode technology provides 3 to 4 times the energy capacity of carbon anodes, charging rates as low as 6 minutes, and a lifetime of more than 1000 cycles. Its manufacturing process enables production of a fully functional anode at half the cost of traditional carbon anodes. BESSTECH’s anode is completely carbon free and does not require the use of solvents, binders, dry rooms, calendaring lines, or drying lines. As a result, battery assemblers can produce batteries with better performance at more competitive prices.
