Abstract:
The Iranian enterprise Emad Pharmaceutical Co. used nanotechnology to produce a new antibacterial dressing named Agicoat® which can be used in the treatment of wounds and burns.
Traditional dressings, known as non-sorbent dressings, are derivatives of cellulose. Gauze is a member of the family of these dressings, and it is usually placed on the wound after applying an antibacterial or antiseptic layer on the wound. One of the problems in these dressings is that the dressing sticks to the wound and it causes pain during the replacement. In addition, some parts of the dressing stay on the wound after the replacement. The application of Agicoat® is a simple solution to overcome this problem.
Agicoat® antibacterial dressing is a dressing with a single layer coating of silver nanocrystals. The API of the dressing is an antibiotic and it affects various types of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi. The wound is treated relatively fast due to the excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammation properties of the dressing. Among the other advantages of the product, mention can be made of the lack for the need of other types of antiseptics such as betadine or antibiotic lotions, the lack for the need of quick replacement of the dressing, and appropriate oxygen and humidity delivery to the wound.
In addition to its high efficiency, another innovation of the product is the presence of an indicator to change the color of the fibers after the release of silver ions. The fibers turn from dark green to light green (close to white) after the release. This way, the user can easily find out when to change the dressing.
Agicoat® antibacterial dressing can be used in the treatment of various types of burns, diabetic wounds, mashed and chronic wounds, and bedsores.
