Iranian researchers from Arak University succeeded in the production of nanocomposite membranes which have very good performance in desalination and sweetening of water.

The produced samples are able to selectively eliminate heavy metals from wastewater. Purification of industrial wastewater, specially in petrochemical industry, is among the other advantages of the membranes. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been used in the production of the membranes.

Ion exchanging membranes are known as very efficient tools in processes such as desalination and sweetening and concentration of salty water, recycling of valuable metals from industrial wastewater, pharmaceutical industries, food industries and production of chemicals. In addition, the membranes play an important role in biological processes and industries.

In this research, the researchers tried to produce and modify membranes used in electrodialysis process for desalination and sweetening water and purification of industrial wastewater. A type of ion exchanging nanocomposite membrane was produced in this research, based on polyvinyl chloride by using titanium dioxide nanoparticles, and the effect of the presence of nanoparticles in the membrane structure were studied on the performance of the membrane.

According to the results, the use of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in the structure of ion exchanging membrane significantly increases the mechanical behavior, separation process, and electrochemical properties of the membranes, and it decreases the energy consumption in the system. The produced samples are very cost-efficient as well as having the potential to compete with the industrial and commercial products.

Among the desirable properties of the produced membranes, mention can be made of high selectivity and passing, selective separation, low electrical resistance, mechanical resistance and appropriate chemical stability.
