Iranian Scientists Find Solution to Measure Species Existing in Liquids

Medical, foodstuff and environmental industries can use the results of the research to measure and detect the samples and control the quality of products.

XRF device is a very powerful tool in detection and measurement processes, which is usually used on solid samples. The aim of the research was to expand the application of the device. An extraction from liquids and preparation of the samples are required to do so. Many methods have so far been introduced for the extraction of species from various environments, among which mention can be made of the use of nanostructures such as graphene oxide to interact with the species and extracting it from the environment.

In this research, the objective was to extract and measure vitamin B12 from liquid samples. To this end, the vitamin was extracted from the media by using graphene oxide. Then, the sample was introduced to XRF device after placing graphene oxide on a filter. According to the researchers, since vitamin B12 has a cobalt atom in its structure, the tracing of cobalt concentration in vitamin can be considered as a sign of the concentration of the vitamin itself.

Results showed that the proposed method has good accuracy, linear range and low detection limit. The method is also quick, simple, and sensitive and it enables the extraction of vitamin B12 from a large quantity of thin samples.

This method is a beginning to similar projects for the extraction of metal-organic compounds to measure their concentration by using XRF device.

Results of the research have been published in X-RAY SPECTROMETRY, vol. 44, issue 1, 2015, pp. 16-23.
