Abstract:
Iranian researchers succeeded in production of filters with high efficiency for the separation of water from oil materials in petroleum pollutions.
A new nanocomposite has been used in the production of the filter, which simultaneously enjoys ultra hydrophilic and ultra oleophobic properties.
Hydrocarbon sediments have high tendency for the creation of coating, and as a result, destroying surfaces. Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 is considered one of the most serious environmental hazards in the last decade. After the incident, stronger protocols have been defined to prevent similar events. In order to separate oil from water, high capacity materials should be chosen, which have high resistance against oil sedimentation and can be used repeatedly. Among various materials, hydrogels seem to be appropriate for designing filters to separate water from oil due to their high sorption capacity and high water intake.
In this research, the use of nanocomposites synthesized with hydrophilic and oleophobic properties has been a new, simple and cost effective method for reducing petroleum pollution through the elimination of oil stains in aqueous media. Among other applications of the product, mention can be made of increasing lifetime and resistance of the filter at actual environmental conditions, including corrosion and degradation by bacteria and the use of flexible beds such as cloth as the net.
In order to obtain the objectives, a nanocomposite containing poly (acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) and silver nanoparticles was firstly synthesized by using ammonium persulfate as the initiator and methylene bisacrylamide as the cross-linker. Next, the swelling properties of the product were optimized, and finally, the product was coated on a net-like bed to create the filter.
Results of the research have been published in Water, Air and Soil Pollution, vol. 225, issue 1, 2014, pp. 2115-1 to 2115-14.
