Abstract:
The Center of Innovation for Nanobiotechnology (COIN) is a Key Supporter of the upcoming COMS 2011 conference to be hosted at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC on August 28th through September 1st. This conference draws a 45% international crowd, and has an excellent 16-year track record of providing rich networking with key opinion leaders in nanotechnology. The conference will offer critical learning opportunities in areas impacted by nanotechnology, such as nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine, energy and cleantech, MEMS and electronics, defense and aerospace, nanomanufacturing, and investment. After attending the 2010 conference in Albuquerque, NM, COIN recruited the conference to North Carolina. MANCEF decided to place the COMS 2011 conference in Greensboro in close proximity to many of NC's nanotech assets, including the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering and NC A&T's Engineering Research Center.

COIN is playing a key role at COMS 2011:

· During the "Global Overview of Small Technology" session (Monday August 29th, 10:30am-12:30pm), COIN's Laura Faulconer, PhD, will present "North Carolina on the Nano Map," identifying key players that make up NC's nanobiotech infrastructure, revealing strengths and opportunities.
· The "Investor Forum" (Tuesday August 30th, 3:30-5:00pm) features venture capitalists, angel investors, and co-chaired by COIN's Jim Roberts to present their interests in investing in the nanotechnology and MEMS sectors.
· The "NanoBio & Nanomedicine Convergence" (Wednesday August 31st, 8:45-10:30am) session, chaired by Dr. Faulconer, will bring together a panel of entrepreneurs and academic thought leaders in different sectors to discuss the opportunities that are emerging at the interface between multiple industries and sectors.
· The "Nanotechnology in Products: Pitfalls and Success in the Path to a Commercial Product" (Wednesday August 31st, 11:00am-12:30pm) session, chaired by Dr. Faulconer, will present a roadmap to avoiding the pitfalls to commercializing platform nanotechnology products, how to leverage strong relationships to accelerate commercialization, and how to navigate effectively among competitive products with disruptive technology.

The COMS 2011 conference will feature keynote speakers that are leading nanomedicine innovators and entrepreneurs: Dr. Joseph DeSimone at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Dr. Anthony Atala at the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine. COIN was instrumental in securing these speakers and generating widespread support of this conference.
