Beard Selected to Lead Business and Operations Directorate, Girrens Named Head of Engineering

Los Alamos, NM | Posted on May 4th, 2011

"Carl is a highly accomplished and versatile leader, managing a wide range of scientific and manufacturing operations," Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio said. "At Los Alamos and elsewhere, Carl's teams have improved productivity and safely executed programs," he said, noting that Beard has received two Defense Programs Awards of Excellence.

Beard came to Los Alamos in 2006 to help lead the Stockpile Manufacturing and Support organization. He also has worked in a number of roles at the National Nuclear Security Administration's Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas.

A former professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin, Beard has bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University.

Anastasio also announced that Steve Girrens will become the Lab's new associate director for engineering.

Girrens has led Los Alamos's Technology Transfer Division since 2008. He's served in other capacities at Los Alamos, including the Engineering Sciences and Applications Division and as a group leader

for Weapon Response and Engineering Analysis.

"Steve is skilled at leading virtually all facets of engineering," said Anastasio. "Whether it is preliminary design, analysis, computational modeling, commercialization, or the transition to manufacturing, Steve has done it all."

Girrens has bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Wichita State University and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Colorado State University.
