Energy conference hits planetarium

Abstract:
Midland Issues ranging from the effect of plugging in electric cars will have on the power grid to future oil and gas drilling techniques were discussed Saturday at a nonpartisan leadership organization's quarterly meeting.

During the day's final panel, future technological advances in energy were discussed. Wade Adams, director of Rice University's Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, said nanotechnology is developing materials so strong that will drastically reduce the weight of drill pipe and other equipment used in oil drilling, which will reduce the size and improve the safety of rigs.

"Nanotechnology is critical to beginning revolutionary advances, because everything that happens in energy pretty much happens at the nanometer scale," he said.
