Oil industry buys time to perfect solar
Abstract:
"There are a trillion barrels of oil in the sands when you include what is possible with SAGD (steam assisted gravity drainage), since most of the deposits can't be mined from the surface. That is more oil than Saudi Arabia, but few people seem to understand what the sands represent, and how massive they are," said Sweeny, who is now on tour to publicize his book.
"So the sands give us time to perfect solar. And I think in 20 years solar energy will be huge."
Thanks to advances in nanotechnology, solar is getting better and better at converting the sun's energy into electricity.
"Right now the best solar is 15 per cent efficient. But with the advances being made, like coating the inside of nanotubes, many in the industry feel that number will be 85 per cent in 20 years, and that will change everything. The founders of Google are heavily into this, because they believe it has so much potential."
