Dreaming to bridge surface science and materials science: An interview with Prof. Kai Wu of Peking University

Abstract:
In Materials Science, I only focus on two narrow areas: controlled fabrications of nanomaterials on solid surfaces, and surface properties of the prepared nanocrystals. Surface plays a key role in nanoscience.

On the one hand, most nanomaterials have to be supported by a substrate. This determines that a prepared nanomaterial may interact, to some extent, with the substrate. This could vary the properties of the prepared nanomaterial. Meanwhile, a nanomaterial grown on a substrate might be strongly and spatially confined by the substrate surface. Therefore, I have been devoting myself to establish novel approaches to preparing nanomaterials at the surface. We have been utilizing solid templates to confine the growth of nanomaterials at the surface. One example is the anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template. We can use both the interior and exterior surfaces of this porous template to fabricate various types of nanostructures such as two-dimensional nanonets or one-dimensional nanowire or nanotube arrays.
