Our view: New creativity needed to create jobs
Abstract:
Build public/private partnerships. The announcement in summer 2009 that SUNYIT is starting a partnership with the highly successful nanotechnology program at University at Albany might someday be recognized as the first step toward a 21st-century economy locally. Thanks to work by Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito, D-Rome, and others, we might have an economic game-changer on our hands.
With further research, in Albany and now potentially in Marcy, nanotechnology could lead to ever-more breakthroughs worth untold dollars to companies such as Intel and IBM, just two of the businesses that are now considering presences here tied to the SUNYIT plans. That's an exciting endeavor for SUNYIT to become part of, as public research and private enterprise have already created a cluster of research labs and well-paying tech jobs in Albany.
Local officials need to put aside their tendency for squabbling over turf and embrace nanotechnology. If all goes as planned, then a decade hence, well-educated young people might choose to remain here and work in nanotech instead of seeking such opportunities far away.
