Problem-solving nanohorns
Abstract:
Single-walled and multi-walled CNT are powerful adsorbents but they are thought by some to be too expensive. In addition, it can be difficult to remove impurities and traces of the metal catalyst used in their production. An alternative type of carbon nanomaterial is single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWCNH). They have the advantage that they are produced without a catalyst by laser ablation of pure graphite, so have the potential to be cheaper.
SWCNH have been applied in various fields such as drug delivery, fuel cells and super capacitors and their range of properties has prompted Chinese researchers to examine their use as an SPE adsorbent. Guobao Xu and colleagues from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry and Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, demonstrated SPE with SWCNH for the first time in the extraction of the priority pollutant 4-nitrophenol from water.
