Abstract:
Researchers have developed an innovative approach, stimulating the body's natural defense system using interleukin-12 p70 (also termed IL-12) nanocoatings, to prevent open-fracture associated infection. The IL-12 nanocoating, prepared via electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly nanotechnology, has been found to substantially decrease open fracture associated infection in an osteomyelitis rat model. The developed technology has also been shown to be advantageous over traditional systemic and percutaneous treatments. The developed approach might be a revolutionary step toward preventing open fracture associated infections using a non-antibiotic therapy.
