Nanotech needs dreamers, fast thinkers, speaker says
Abstract:
A research lab at Central Michigan University is on the brink of new discoveries using particles as small as a millionth to a billionth of a meter, and making them work will require superb training and a spirit that dreams toward the future.
So says Nathan Long, president and chief executive officer of CMU Research Corp., a research arm of Central Michigan University. It is developing tiny "nanoscale" structures that can be about the size of 10 atoms and can manipulate atoms in molecules. Speaking to the Tri-County Economics Club Monday, Long also had a stern admonition that businesspeople learn about this new technology "or else somebody's going to come along and take your business from you."
Super-thin coatings made of these tiny particles can prevent friction, kill microbes on surfaces or deliver drugs to specific targets inside the body. Ten years from now, Americans will begin seeing sophisticated nanodevices, even more complex ones in 20 years, Long said. He showed how nanoparticles could theoretically stop HIV from propagating in humans.
