Global publisher Wiley-Blackwell, which is part of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., today announced strong gains in Impact Factors for its journals across the majority of subject areas, according to the Thomson ISI(R) 2006 Journal Citation Reports.

Wiley-Blackwell now has 321 unique titles which are in the top 25 percent by Impact Factor within their subject area. Impact factors are a benchmark of a journal's value and recognize how frequently peer-reviewed journals are cited by other researchers.

In the area of social sciences and humanities, Wiley-Blackwell now publishes more journals in the Social Science Citation Index than any other publisher, a total of 237 titles. Of these, 37 journals saw an increase in Impact Factor of more than 50 percent. Thirty-nine titles are now ranked in the top 10 percent of their category, more than any other publisher.

For the third consecutive year, Ecology Letters increased its Impact Factor which is now 7.609 and retains its position as the most highly cited primary research journal in Ecology. Insect Science, published on behalf of the Chinese Academy of Science, also received its first Impact Factor in 2006.

In the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology, the journal Small received its first Impact Factor of 6.024, the highest initial Impact Factor for a journal specializing in the field.

Angewandte Chemie, a journal of the German Chemical Society, has increased its Impact Factor again to 10.232. Electrophoperesis also increased its Impact Factor to 4.101, rising for the fourth straight year in a row.

The International Journal of Applied Ceramics Technology showed a 109 percent increase over last year, and is now ranked the number one in the materials science category.

Many Wiley-Blackwell journals also ranked number one in their subject category, including Addiction, Journal of Avian Biology, Fish and Fisheries, Advanced Synthesis and Catalysis, Arthritis and Rheumatism, American Journal of Transplantation, Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, Reviews in Medical Virology, Journal of the American Geriatric Society, Mass Spectrometry Reviews, Indoor Air, Phycological Research, Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Child Development and The Millbank Quarterly.
