Silica nanostructure envelops cells of brewer's yeast
Abstract:
Biological cells could act as useful sensors but until now it's been tricky to incorporate them into nanostructures. With this in mind, a team at the University of New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory, US, have employed phospholipids to direct the self-assembly of silica-based nanostructures containing cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a yeast that is also used to brew beer.
