Researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Vanderbilt University in the US have found that C60 molecules (buckyballs) are likely to bind strongly to single and double-stranded DNA in an aqueous environment. They say the results suggest that C60 molecules have a potentially negative impact on the structure, stability and biological functions of DNA molecules.
"We don't know whether they can penetrate a cell nucleus and reach the DNA stored there. What this study shows is that if the buckyballs can get into the nucleus they could cause real problems."
